The earliest settlers of Coconut Grove were the Pent and Frow families. In the 1830's both families were lighthouse keepers at Cape Florida and homesteaders in what is now Coconut Grove. Throughout the years Coconut Grove has always had the reputation of attracting authors, artists, musicians and inventors such as Robert Frost, Alexander Graham Bell, Tennessee Williams and Marjory Stoneman Douglas, defender of the Everglades. Coconut Grove, referred to by the locals as "The Grove", consists of numerous distinct neighborhoods with various unique styles. The interesting thing about "The Grove" is that you can find a small cottage next to a brand new large mansion. Some of these estates are waterfront with direct access to the ocean.
